Mazda Navigation: MZD Connect
Mazda’s infotainment platform — called MZD Connect — uses an SD card for navigation map storage across the majority of Mazda models fitted with factory navigation. MZD Connect is controlled via a rotary dial (the Commander control) on the centre console rather than touchscreen input, which keeps driver interaction away from the screen while moving.
Which Mazda Models Use MZD Connect Navigation?
- Mazda 2 (DJ, from 2014) — navigation on higher specs
- Mazda 3 (BM/BN, from 2013; BP, from 2019)
- Mazda 6 (GJ, from 2013)
- Mazda CX-3 (from 2015)
- Mazda CX-5 (KE/KF, from 2012)
- Mazda CX-30 (from 2019)
- Mazda MX-5 (ND, from 2015) — on higher specifications
Navigation was available on Sport Nav, GT Sport, Sport Nav+ and similar upper trim levels. Entry trims typically have the MZD Connect unit without navigation.
Earlier Mazda Navigation (Pre-2013)
Older Mazda models before the MZD Connect era used TomTom-based navigation integrated into the infotainment unit. These systems also use SD card updates in most cases, though the card format is different from MZD Connect cards.
SD Card Slot Location
On MZD Connect models, the SD card slot is located on the front face of the infotainment unit, typically on the lower edge or side of the unit. A small flap or cover protects the slot. Your Mazda handbook will show the exact position for your model.
Checking Your Current Map Version
Use the Commander dial to navigate: Home → Settings → Vehicle Status Monitor → Navigation System → Map Version. Alternatively, some models show this under Settings → General Settings → Map Version.
Installing the Map Update
- Start the engine
- Insert the new navigation SD card into the slot on the head unit
- The MZD Connect system will detect the card and display an update notification
- Use the Commander dial to confirm and begin the update
- Keep the engine running throughout — the update takes 20–45 minutes
- The system restarts when complete; the SD card should remain inserted
Mazda Connected Services (2020+)
Newer Mazda models from 2020 onwards, including the Mazda 3 (BP facelift), CX-30 and CX-5 (KF facelift), may support over-the-air connected map updates when a Mazda Connected Services subscription is active. For these models, SD card updates may still be available as an alternative. Check your model’s specification against Mazda’s current connected services offering.
