Volvo Navigation SD Card Guide: Sensus Navigation and RTI Systems

Volvo Navigation: Sensus and RTI

Volvo has used two main factory navigation platforms that rely on SD card map updates: the RTI (Road and Traffic Information) system fitted to older models, and the Sensus Navigation system introduced with the second-generation XC90 and rolled across Volvo’s range from 2014 onwards.

RTI Navigation (Pre-2014)

The RTI system was fitted to Volvo’s range from approximately 2005 to 2014, including the XC60 (first generation), XC90 (first generation), V70, S80, C30, C70 and V50. RTI uses an SD card for map storage, with the slot typically located in the glovebox on the right-hand side.

Map updates for RTI systems are still available, though coverage may be more limited than for current Sensus systems.

Sensus Navigation (2014+)

Sensus Navigation replaced RTI with the launch of the second-generation Volvo XC90 (2014) and was subsequently introduced across the V40, V60, S60, XC40, V90, S90, XC60 (second generation) and XC90. Sensus features a large portrait-format touchscreen — 8 or 9 inches depending on the model — and uses an SD card for navigation map storage.

The SD card slot on Sensus-equipped vehicles is located in the centre console area, typically in a small compartment beneath or beside the gear selector.

Volvo XC40 and Newer Models

The Volvo XC40 (from 2017) and later models use Sensus in standard form but may also support connected over-the-air map updates when a Volvo On Call subscription is active. For models without an active subscription, SD card map updates remain the standard update method.

Checking Your Map Version

For RTI: press the MENU button → Settings → System Information → Map Version.
For Sensus: tap the Settings icon → System → About → Map Version (on the touchscreen).

Installing the Map Update

  • Start the engine or switch to accessory mode
  • Insert the navigation SD card into the correct slot
  • Sensus will display an update notification on screen
  • Confirm to begin — keep the engine running (25–50 minutes)
  • The system restarts when complete; leave the card inserted for ongoing use
