Land Rover and Range Rover Navigation SD Card Guide: InControl and Meridian Systems

Land Rover Navigation Systems Overview

Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles have used several generations of navigation technology, with the transition from DVD to SD card happening around 2012. The current InControl Touch and InControl Touch Pro systems are the most widely fitted in UK models from 2012 onwards.

Navigation System Generations

Legacy Navigation (Pre-2012)

Older Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Freelander models used DVD-based navigation. These systems are updated via DVD rather than SD card and are less commonly updated due to the age of the vehicles and disc availability.

InControl Touch (2012–2016)

InControl Touch was introduced with the Range Rover (L405), Range Rover Sport (L494), Discovery Sport (L550) and Freelander 2 facelift. It features an 8-inch touchscreen and uses an SD card for navigation map storage. The SD card slot is located in the centre console storage area.

InControl Touch Pro (2016+)

InControl Touch Pro introduced a larger 10-inch screen with improved processing and a new interface. It was fitted to the Range Rover (L405 facelift), Range Rover Sport (L494 facelift), Range Rover Velar (L560), Discovery (L462) and Defender (L663, select specifications).

InControl Touch Pro uses a different SD card format to InControl Touch — the two are not interchangeable. The SD card slot is in the centre console.

How to Identify Your System

From the home screen, tap the Settings cog → About → Software Information. The system version and current map version will be displayed. InControl Touch typically shows a version beginning with “16.x” or “17.x”; InControl Touch Pro shows higher version numbers.

Installing the Navigation Map Update

  • Start the engine
  • Open the centre console and insert the SD card into the navigation slot
  • The InControl system will detect the card and display an update prompt
  • Select to begin the update — keep the engine running throughout
  • The update typically takes 30–60 minutes and the screen will restart when complete
  • Leave the card inserted — InControl reads map data from it during navigation use

Defender (L663) Navigation Note

The new Defender from 2020 uses the Pivi Pro system on higher specifications, which receives over-the-air connected updates when a data plan is active. Lower-spec Defenders may use InControl Touch Pro with SD card updates. Check your specific model’s specification sheet or the About screen to confirm.
