Audi MIB2 and MIB2+: The Most Widely Fitted Audi Nav Systems
While earlier Audi models used the MMI (Multi Media Interface) system with DVD or SD navigation (covered in our MMI 2G/3G guide), the majority of Audis on UK roads today have the MIB2 or MIB2+ platform — a VW Group-wide navigation system that uses SD cards for map storage. This guide focuses on MIB2 and MIB2+.
Which Audi Models Use MIB2/MIB2+?
MIB2 was introduced around 2016 and MIB2+ (with updated hardware and larger screens) from around 2018. Models include:
- Audi A1 (GB, from 2019)
- Audi A3 / S3 / RS3 (8V facelift from 2016, 8Y from 2020)
- Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 (B9, from 2015)
- Audi A5 / S5 / RS5 (F5, from 2016)
- Audi A6 / S6 / RS6 (C8, from 2018)
- Audi Q3 / RS Q3 (F3, from 2018)
- Audi Q5 / SQ5 (FY, from 2017)
- Audi Q7 / SQ7 (4M facelift, from 2019)
- Audi TT / TTS / TT RS (8S, from 2014)
- Audi e-tron / e-tron Sportback (from 2019)
MIB2 Navigation Names on Audi
On Audi, MIB2 navigation is marketed as:
- Navigation plus — standard MIB2 with built-in navigation
- MMI Navigation plus with MMI Touch — MIB2+ with larger screen and touch input
- MMI Navigation plus with MMI Touch Response — dual-screen MIB2+ system (upper and lower screens)
How to Check Your Current Map Version
Press the CAR or MENU button → Setup → Navigation → Map version. Alternatively, on MMI Touch systems: CAR → Function menu → Navigation → Navigation settings → Map version.
SD Card Slot Location
On MIB2 Audi models, the SD card slot is in the SD/AUX panel in the centre console storage area, typically alongside a second slot for audio/media. On MMI Touch Response systems with dual screens, it may be located in the lower touchscreen console area. Your Audi handbook will show the exact position.
Installing the Map Update
- Turn on the ignition
- Insert the navigation SD card into the navigation slot (not the media slot)
- A map update notification will appear — select to begin
- Keep the ignition on throughout (25–50 minutes depending on map region)
- The MMI system restarts when complete; leave the card inserted for ongoing navigation use
MIB2 vs MMI 3G+: Are They the Same?
No. MMI 3G+ (used in earlier Audi A4/A5/A6/Q5/Q7 from approximately 2009–2015) is a different platform with a different SD card format and slot location. If your Audi has a rotary MMI dial with a separate screen that rises from the dashboard, you have MMI 3G+ — not MIB2. Our separate Audi MMI guide covers that system. If your navigation screen is fully integrated into the dashboard or is a touchscreen, you likely have MIB2.
