BMW Navigation SD Card Guide: NBT, EVO and CIC Systems Explained

BMW iDrive Navigation and SD Cards

BMW’s iDrive navigation system has gone through several generations, each using a different map storage format. Getting the right SD card for your specific BMW requires knowing which navigation system you have — this guide makes that simple.

BMW Navigation System Generations

CIC (Car Information Computer)

Used in BMWs from approximately 2009–2013. CIC systems use a DVD-based navigation update rather than SD cards. If your BMW has a single-slot DVD drive in the glovebox or centre console, this is likely your system.

NBT (Next Big Thing)

Introduced around 2013. NBT systems use a navigation SD card — a full-size SD card that inserts into a slot usually located in the glovebox. This was used across the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Series and X models from 2013–2016.

NBT EVO

The updated version of NBT, introduced around 2016. NBT EVO has a larger, higher-resolution display and improved touch response. It still uses the same full-size SD card slot in the glovebox, but requires a different map version to NBT.

MGU and MGU High (2019+)

Newer BMW models from 2019 onwards use the MGU or MGU High system, which receives over-the-air map updates and does not require an SD card.

How to Check Your BMW’s Navigation System

From the iDrive menu: navigate to Navigation → Map Version. The map version code and system type will be displayed. Alternatively, go to Settings → System → Version information.

You can also check your vehicle’s build list (on the label inside the driver’s door) for the navigation option code: 609 indicates Professional Navigation (NBT), 6U3 indicates the later EVO system.

Installing the BMW Navigation SD Card

  • Open the glovebox and locate the SD card slot
  • Insert the navigation SD card with the label facing up
  • Start the engine (or press the start button without pressing the brake to enter accessory mode)
  • The iDrive screen will prompt you to begin the map update
  • Accept the update and allow it to complete — do not remove the card during this process
  • Update time is typically 30–60 minutes for a full map region

Important: Keep the Card Inserted

Unlike some navigation systems, BMW NBT and NBT EVO require the SD card to remain inserted during normal use — the navigation reads directly from the card. Removing the card will disable navigation until it is reinserted.
