Ford Navigation SD Card Guide: SYNC 2 and SYNC 3 Map Updates

Ford SYNC Navigation: SD Card or USB?

Ford’s SYNC infotainment system uses different update methods depending on which generation you have. SYNC 2 systems use a dedicated navigation SD card that slots into the dashboard, while SYNC 3 systems can accept navigation updates via both SD card and USB. This guide covers both.

Which Ford Models Use SYNC Navigation SD Cards?

SYNC 2 and SYNC 3 navigation was available across a wide range of Ford models from approximately 2013 onwards, including:

  • Ford Focus (2013–2019)
  • Ford Fiesta (2013–2019)
  • Ford Mondeo (2014–2022)
  • Ford Kuga (2013–2020)
  • Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX
  • Ford Galaxy
  • Ford S-MAX
  • Ford Edge
  • Ford EcoSport

Not all trim levels included navigation as standard — it was typically available on Titanium and above, or as a factory option on lower trims.

How to Identify Your SYNC Version

The easiest way to identify your system is to look at the screen. SYNC 2 has a smaller, often non-touchscreen display with physical buttons below it. SYNC 3 has a larger touchscreen (typically 8 inches) with a more modern interface and swipe gestures.

You can also check: Settings → System → About. Your SYNC version and current map version will be displayed here.

Finding the Right Navigation SD Card

The SD card must match your region and SYNC version. UK and European vehicles need the EU/UK map version — North American map cards will not work in UK vehicles. Using the wrong region card will result in an error message or the system simply not recognising the card.

How to Install the Ford Navigation SD Card

  • With the ignition on, locate the SD card slot — typically on the lower dashboard near the USB port
  • Insert the new navigation SD card firmly until it clicks
  • The screen will show a “Map Update” prompt — select to begin installation
  • Keep the ignition on during installation (do not switch off)
  • Installation typically takes 15–30 minutes depending on map size
  • The system will restart automatically when complete

What if the Card Isn’t Recognised?

If your Ford SYNC system doesn’t recognise the card, check: (1) you have the correct region version, (2) the card is fully inserted, (3) your SYNC software is up to date. Occasionally a SYNC software update is required before the latest map version will be accepted.

How Often Should You Update?

Ford releases map updates annually. Updating every 1–2 years is recommended — UK road networks change significantly with new junctions, bypasses, and speed limit changes every year.
