Mercedes Navigation: Finding the Right SD Card
Mercedes-Benz fits different navigation systems to different models and trim levels, which means there’s no single SD card that works across all Mercedes vehicles. This guide explains each system and how to identify which one your car has.
Mercedes Navigation System Overview
Audio 20 with SD Navigation
Audio 20 is the mid-range infotainment system fitted to many Mercedes models as standard or as a lower-cost navigation option. It uses an SD card for map storage, typically inserted into a slot on the front of the head unit or in the centre console.
Models: C-Class (W204, W205), E-Class (W212, W213), A-Class (W176, W177), B-Class, GLA, CLA and others — depending on specification.
NTG 4.5 / NTG 5
NTG (Navigation Telematics Gateway) systems are more advanced and were fitted to higher-spec models and optional on lower trim levels. NTG 4.5 and NTG 5 both use SD cards for map data.
COMAND Online
COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data) is the premium navigation and entertainment system. Earlier COMAND systems used DVD updates; later COMAND Online systems from around 2014 onwards switched to SD card navigation updates.
How to Identify Your Mercedes Navigation System
Look at the head unit in your dashboard. Audio 20 has a simpler interface and typically a smaller screen. COMAND has a larger screen (7 or 8 inch) and a rotary controller on the centre console. NTG 5 has a larger touchscreen display.
To find your exact system version: Menu → System → Version information. This will display your current map version and the system identifier.
SD Card Slot Location in Mercedes
The location varies by model and system:
- Audio 20: SD card slot on the front face of the head unit (below the screen)
- COMAND: Two SD card slots in the centre armrest or centre console area — one for music, one for navigation
- NTG 5: Typically in the centre console storage area
Installing the Map Update
- Insert the SD card into the navigation slot (not the media slot if two are present)
- Start the engine or switch to accessory mode
- A prompt will appear asking to begin the map update — confirm to proceed
- Keep the ignition on throughout — the process takes 20–45 minutes
- Leave the SD card inserted after update is complete, as navigation reads from the card
Which Map Region Do I Need?
UK and Republic of Ireland vehicles need the Western Europe or UK & Ireland map. Do not purchase a map for a different region — it will not contain UK roads and will likely display an error on your system.
