The UK now has over 400 miles of smart motorway where the hard shoulder runs as a live traffic lane and overhead gantry signs control variable speed limits. For drivers using factory navigation, it’s worth understanding what the sat nav can and cannot tell you on these roads.

What Factory Nav Shows on Smart Motorways

  • Fixed speed camera positions — HADECS3 cameras are fixed installations and are included in current navigation map data
  • Average speed zones — zone boundaries are mapped so your navigation alerts you as you enter and exit them
  • Road layout — lane count and basic motorway layout is mapped, reflecting the road as built
  • Service areas and junctions — exit points and junction numbers are fully mapped

What Factory Nav Cannot Show

  • Variable speed limits in real time — gantry speed limits change continuously; map data shows the statutory maximum, not the current enforcement
  • Live lane closures — a red X on overhead signs is not visible to the navigation system
  • Stopped vehicle detection alerts — Highways England’s live monitoring is not fed into static map data

What This Means in Practice

Your factory sat nav is an excellent routing tool, but on smart motorway sections the overhead gantry signs are your primary speed limit source. Gantry signs take legal precedence over the navigation display. A red X over a lane means that lane is closed — regardless of what the map shows.

Keeping Camera Data Current

Highways England continues converting motorway sections to smart motorways and installing new HADECS cameras. Updating your navigation SD card annually ensures new fixed camera positions on recently converted sections are included in your speed camera alert data.
