Volvo Factory Navigation Systems
Volvo has used several generations of navigation systems across its model range. Most Volvo models built between 2010 and 2019 use a HERE map-based navigation system with an SD card for map storage. Knowing which system your vehicle has is the first step to finding the correct map update card.
Which Volvo Models Use a Navigation SD Card?
- XC90 (2015–2019) — Sensus Navigation system, SD card in the central console
- XC60 (2010–2017) — Volvo Navigation system, SD card slot in the centre console or glovebox
- XC40 (2018–2020 pre-facelift) — Sensus Navigation, SD card slot
- V60/V60 Cross Country (2010–2018) — SD card navigation
- V90/V90 Cross Country (2016–2019) — Sensus Navigation, SD card
- S60/S90 (2010–2019) — SD card navigation
From 2020 onwards, many Volvo models switched to an Android-based infotainment system (Android Automotive OS), which uses downloaded map apps rather than SD cards.
What Does a Volvo Navigation SD Card Update Include?
- Updated UK and Western European road networks
- Revised speed limit data for UK roads
- Updated Points of Interest including fuel stations, EV chargers, and rest stops
- Speed camera locations for fixed cameras on UK roads
- New road additions including motorway junctions and A-road improvements
How to Find the SD Card Slot on a Volvo
On most Volvo models, the navigation SD card slot is located in the centre console storage compartment, beneath the removable tray. On some older models, it can also be found in the glovebox. Check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure — it will show the exact location for your model year.
How to Update Your Volvo Navigation Maps
- Start the engine to power the infotainment system fully
- Remove the existing navigation SD card from the slot
- Insert the new map update card firmly until it clicks
- The system will prompt you to confirm the map installation
- Accept the prompt — the update installs automatically, taking 20–40 minutes
- Leave the SD card in the slot after the update completes
Which Map Region Should I Choose?
For UK drivers who do not regularly travel to mainland Europe, a UK-only map update is the more economical choice. If you take the car to Europe on holidays or work trips, a UK and Europe card covers the full European road network and is better value for those drivers.
