Porsche Navigation SD Card Guide: PCM 3.1, PCM 4.0 and Connect Plus

Porsche Communication Management: Navigation Overview

Porsche’s infotainment and navigation system — Porsche Communication Management (PCM) — has used SD cards for navigation map storage across several generations. Whether your Porsche has PCM 3.1, PCM 4.0 or an earlier version, this guide explains how to identify your system and update your maps.

PCM Generations and Navigation Formats

PCM 3.0 / 3.1 (2009–2016)

PCM 3.1 uses a DVD or SD card for navigation depending on specification. Many Porsche models from this era have a DVD drive in the centre console for map updates. Some later PCM 3.1 configurations accept SD card navigation.

Models: 911 (991.1), Boxster/Cayman (981), Cayenne (92A), Panamera (970), Macan (95B early).

PCM 4.0 (2016–2019)

PCM 4.0 introduced a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen and moved fully to SD card navigation. The SD card slot is located in the centre console, typically in the storage compartment behind the gear selector.

Models: 911 (991.2), Boxster/Cayman (718), Cayenne (9YA first gen facelift), Panamera (971), Macan (95B facelift).

Porsche Connect / Connect Plus (2019+)

Newer Porsche models use online connected navigation via Porsche Connect, which can receive over-the-air updates when a Porsche Connect subscription is active. For vehicles without an active subscription, SD card updates remain the standard update method.

Checking Your PCM Map Version

Press the Navigation button on the PCM screen → Options → Map Version. Alternatively: PCM menu → Settings → System Information → Map Version. Note both the PCM software version and the map version before ordering an update.

Installing the PCM Navigation Map Update

  • Start the engine
  • Insert the navigation SD card into the slot in the centre console
  • PCM will detect the card and show an update notification
  • Confirm to begin — keep the engine running (30–60 minutes for a full European map)
  • The PCM system restarts when complete; leave the card inserted

Porsche and VW Group Compatibility

Porsche is part of the Volkswagen Group and shares some navigation hardware with Audi on certain platforms. However, PCM-specific map cards are not interchangeable with standard Audi MIB cards — always use a map card confirmed to be compatible with your specific PCM version and Porsche model.
