Navigation SD Card Not Working? 7 Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Why Your Navigation SD Card Might Not Work

A navigation SD card that isn’t working is usually caused by one of a small number of identifiable issues — most of which are fixable without a dealer visit. Here are the seven most common problems and how to resolve them.

Problem 1: “No Map Data Found” or Card Not Recognised

Cause: Wrong region card, wrong system version, or card not fully inserted.

Fix: Remove the card and reinsert firmly until it clicks. Check that the card is the correct region (UK/Europe) and the correct version for your navigation system (e.g., NBT vs NBT EVO). A card for a different region or system generation will not be recognised.

Problem 2: Map Update Fails Halfway Through

Cause: Ignition turned off during update, or power interruption.

Fix: Remove and reinsert the card with the ignition on. The system should offer to resume or restart the update. Always ensure the engine is running (not just accessory mode) during a map update to prevent battery drain cutting the update short.

Problem 3: “Update Already Applied” Message

Cause: The card version matches or is older than the map already installed.

Fix: Check your current installed map version (see our guide: How to Check Your Navigation Map Version) and confirm the card you have is a newer version. If you ordered an update card but already have that version installed, you don’t need the update — contact the supplier.

Problem 4: Navigation Works But Some Roads Are Missing

Cause: Map data is out of date.

Fix: This isn’t a fault — it means your maps predate the missing roads. An updated navigation SD card with current map data will resolve this.

Problem 5: SD Card Ejects or Doesn’t Stay In

Cause: The card slot spring mechanism is worn, or the card isn’t the right physical size.

Fix: Ensure you’re using a full-size SD card (not microSD or miniSD). Some systems use a proprietary slot with a locking mechanism — check your vehicle handbook for the correct insertion method. If the slot is physically damaged, a dealer visit may be required.

Problem 6: Navigation System Shows an Error Code

Cause: Varies — can indicate incompatible card, corrupted data, or a software mismatch.

Fix: Note the exact error code and search for it along with your car model. Common error codes (e.g., VW/Audi “Error: No navigation device”, Ford “Map Update Error”) have known causes and fixes. In many cases, a SYNC or MIB software update resolves compatibility issues with newer map cards.

Problem 7: Card Works But No Voice Guidance

Cause: Voice guidance may be muted or turned off in navigation settings.

Fix: Go to Navigation Settings → Sound or Guidance and ensure voice prompts are enabled. Check the navigation volume is not set to zero (this is separate from media volume on many systems).

Still Not Working?

If none of the above resolves your issue, contact us with your car make, model, year, navigation system version and the error message you’re seeing — we’ll help identify whether a different card version is needed or whether there’s an underlying system issue to address.
