Audi Navigation SD Card Guide: MMI 2G, 3G, 3G+ and RMC Systems Explained

Does Your Audi Use a Navigation SD Card?

Many Audi models use SD card-based navigation through their MMI (Multi Media Interface) system. Unlike some competitors who use hard drives or online streaming, Audi’s approach makes map updates straightforward — though you need to know which version of MMI your car has before buying an update.

This guide covers the four main Audi navigation platforms and helps you identify which SD card your car needs.

Audi MMI Navigation Systems Overview

MMI 2G (2005–2009)

The original MMI platform used in early Audi A4 (B7), A6 (C6), A8 (D3), and Q7 models. MMI 2G uses a DVD-based navigation system, not an SD card — so if your Audi has MMI 2G, this guide doesn’t apply to your vehicle.

MMI 3G (2009–2013)

Introduced with the second-generation MMI system, MMI 3G began using SD cards for navigation storage. It’s found in:

  • Audi A4 (B8), A5 (8T/8F)
  • Audi A6 (C7, early), A7 (4G, early)
  • Audi A8 (D4, early), Q5 (8R)
  • Audi Q7 (4L facelift)

MMI 3G+ (2012–2018)

An upgraded version of MMI 3G with faster processing, a higher-resolution display, and improved navigation software. Common in:

  • Audi A3 (8V), A4 (B9, early), A5 (F5)
  • Audi A6 (C7 facelift), A7 (4G facelift), Q5 (FY)
  • Audi TT (8S), Q3 (8U facelift)

MMI 3G+ cards typically carry part numbers beginning with 8R0 060 884 or 8V0 060 884.

Audi RMC (Radio Navigation System)

The RMC is a more basic navigation option fitted to entry-level Audi models. It uses a smaller, simpler SD card than MMI and is found in:

  • Audi A1 (8X), A3 (8P/8V basic spec)
  • Audi Q3 (8U, early spec)

RMC cards use part numbers beginning with 8X0 060 884. The interface is simpler than MMI but the update process is identical.

How to Identify Your Audi MMI Version

  • Press the CAR button → Systems ControlMMI Version
  • Or check the existing SD card part number — the first three digits identify the generation
  • MMI 3G and 3G+ look similar but have different screen resolutions; 3G+ has a noticeably sharper display

What’s in the 2024–2025 Audi Map Update?

  • Full European road network update across 47 countries
  • Speed camera and average speed check camera data
  • Updated motorway junctions and smart motorway data
  • New 20mph zone coverage across UK cities and towns
  • EV charging point locations added to POI database

Installing an Audi Navigation SD Card

  1. Turn off the ignition and locate the SD card slot (typically in the centre console armrest or dashboard slot)
  2. Press the existing card inward to release it
  3. Insert the new navigation SD card with the contacts facing down
  4. Turn on the ignition — the MMI system will read the card automatically
  5. Follow any on-screen prompts to confirm the update (2–5 minutes)

Are Audi Navigation SD Cards VIN-Locked?

Some Audi navigation SD cards, particularly for newer MMI versions, may be VIN-coded to a specific vehicle. If you buy a used Audi where the previous owner removed the SD card, or the existing card was for a different vehicle, you will need a new card. Cards purchased from SatNavCardPro are supplied unlocked and will initialise correctly in your vehicle on first use.
