Why UK Maps Need Regular Updates
The UK road network changes constantly. New motorway junctions open, A-roads are upgraded, bypasses relieve congested town centres, and 20mph zones are rolling out across cities and residential areas. A navigation SD card from two or three years ago will be missing a meaningful number of these changes.
20mph Speed Limit Rollouts
Following Wales’ nationwide 20mph rollout on residential roads, similar changes are being implemented across towns and cities in England and Scotland. Older sat nav maps show 30mph on roads that are now 20mph — a real risk for drivers relying on factory sat nav for speed limit guidance.
New Roads and Housing Development
Large-scale housing developments across the UK are adding thousands of new residential roads annually. While these don’t affect motorway routing, they affect last-mile navigation significantly — sending drivers to dead ends or through routes that no longer exist. New link roads, roundabouts and bypasses built since your maps were last updated won’t appear either.
Town Centre Restrictions and Low-Emission Zones
Clean Air Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zones are now active in multiple UK cities including London (ULEZ), Birmingham, Bath, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth and Sheffield. Many town centres are also extending pedestrianisation and installing modal filters. Driving into a restricted zone in a non-compliant vehicle generates an automatic fine via ANPR cameras.
Having current map data ensures routing accuracy in affected city areas and that zone boundaries are correctly shown.
How to Check If Your Maps Are Current
Check your current map version via your navigation system’s settings (see our guide: How to Check Your Navigation Map Version). If your map data is from 2023 or earlier, it is already missing a significant number of the changes above. A current 2025–2026 map update card includes the latest UK road network, updated speed limit data, and current points of interest including new service stations, EV charging locations, and updated hospital and emergency service addresses.
