What Is a Navigation SD Card?
A navigation SD card is a small memory card — the same physical format as those used in cameras and phones — pre-loaded with digital map data for your car’s built-in sat nav system. It slots into a dedicated card slot in your vehicle and provides the navigation system with all the road data it needs to plan routes, display your position on a map, and give turn-by-turn directions.
Unlike a smartphone sat nav app that streams map data over the internet, a factory car navigation system stores all its maps locally on the SD card. This means it works without any mobile signal — anywhere, anytime.
Does My Car Have a Navigation SD Card?
If your car has a built-in sat nav — a navigation map displayed on the dashboard screen, with turn-by-turn voice guidance — it almost certainly uses an SD card or similar storage for its map data. Look for a small card slot in:
- The glovebox (most common location)
- The centre console storage area
- On the face of the infotainment head unit
If your car has a screen but no built-in navigation (only Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), it doesn’t use a navigation SD card — it relies on your phone’s app instead.
Why Do Maps Go Out of Date?
Road networks change constantly. New roads open, junctions are redesigned, speed limits change, and new towns and housing developments add roads that didn’t exist when the SD card was last updated. A navigation SD card from 2–3 years ago will be missing a meaningful number of these changes, causing the sat nav to route incorrectly or show wrong speed limits.
How Often Should I Update?
Most navigation map publishers release annual updates. Updating every 1–2 years is a practical approach for most drivers. If you drive in unfamiliar areas frequently, travel to Europe, or rely heavily on sat nav for work, updating annually is recommended.
How Do I Find the Right Card for My Car?
You need to know three things:
- Your car’s make and model — e.g. VW Golf, Ford Focus, BMW 3 Series
- Your car’s navigation system — e.g. MIB2, SYNC 3, NBT EVO (check Settings → System Information on your screen)
- Your map region — UK only, or UK and Europe
With these three details, you can find the correct card. Our product pages are organised by brand and system to make this straightforward.
How Do I Install It?
- Start your engine
- Find the navigation SD card slot (glovebox or centre console on most vehicles)
- Insert the new card — it will click into place
- Confirm the map update prompt on your screen
- Wait 20–60 minutes with the engine running
- Leave the card inserted — your navigation reads from it continuously
No tools, no downloads, no dealer visit required. If you can insert a memory card into a camera or phone, you can update your navigation SD card.
