Which VW Navigation System Do You Have?
Volkswagen has used several different navigation platforms across its model range over the past decade. Each system uses a specific SD card format, and using the wrong card simply won’t work. This guide explains the three main VW navigation systems and how to find the right map update.
VW RNS 315
The RNS 315 is one of VW’s most widely used navigation head units, found in models from around 2010 to 2018. It uses a standard SD card (V10, V11, V12) for map storage, with the SD card slot located on the face of the unit itself.
Compatible models:
- VW Golf 6 and Golf 7 (early)
- VW Passat (B7, B8 early)
- VW Tiguan (2011–2016)
- VW Polo (2014–2018)
- VW Touran, Sharan, Amarok, Jetta
The RNS 315 is identifiable by its distinctive face-mounted SD card slot and 5-inch screen. The latest map version available for this system is V12, covering both Western and Eastern Europe as separate cards.
VW Discover Media (MIB2)
The Discover Media with MIB2 platform is VW’s mid-range infotainment system used from approximately 2015 onwards. It uses an SD card with a part number typically beginning with 5G0 or 5Q0, inserted into a slot behind the head unit or in the glovebox.
Compatible models:
- VW Golf 7 and Golf 8 (early)
- VW Passat B8
- VW Tiguan (2016–2022)
- VW T-Roc, T-Cross, Polo (2018+)
- VW Touran (2015+), Arteon
MIB2 cards are updated regularly — the latest versions cover 40+ European countries with speed camera data and lane guidance included.
VW Discover Pro
The Discover Pro is VW’s premium navigation system, featuring a larger high-resolution touchscreen and more advanced routing capabilities. It uses its own specific SD card format (V14, V17, V19) with a larger storage capacity.
Compatible models:
- VW Golf 7 GTI, R, and Estate
- VW Passat B8 (top-spec)
- VW Touareg (2015–2018)
- VW Arteon (first generation)
How to Identify Your VW Navigation Version
Three easy ways to check:
- Look at the existing SD card — the part number (e.g. 3AA 051 866, 5G0 919 866) identifies the system
- Check the screen size and design — RNS 315 has a 5″ screen; Discover Media has a 6.5″ screen; Discover Pro has an 8″ or 9.2″ screen
- Navigate to Settings → System → Version — the software version will confirm the platform
Installing a VW Navigation SD Card
- Turn off the ignition
- Locate the SD card slot (varies by system — face of unit, glovebox, or behind the head unit)
- Remove the existing card by pressing it in until it clicks, then releasing
- Insert the new navigation SD card firmly
- Turn on the ignition and allow 2–5 minutes for the system to read the new data
- Confirm the update on screen if prompted
No dealer visit or coding is required. VW navigation SD cards are genuine plug-and-play replacements.
Also Compatible: SEAT and Skoda
Because SEAT and Skoda share the Volkswagen Group (VAG) platform, many VW navigation SD cards are also compatible with equivalent SEAT and Skoda systems (Amundsen, Bolero, Columbus). Always check the part number to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
